In honor of Mother’s Day, we’ve compiled some good-for-your-soul advice from your Southern mom.

When we were upset or sad while growing up, our moms stepped in with words of wisdom. Turns out Mom was right all those years with her quirky sayings. Look below for life advice Middle Tennesseans still turn to today.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Southern moms!

Coping with troubles

When we experienced our first broken hearts or an argument with a best friend, our moms said, “This too shall pass.” She was right. Time heals. Whatever life throws at you, you will eventually get through it.

Staying creative

If we were bored, our mothers told us, “Only boring people get bored.” Nowadays it’s a good reminder to put down that cellphone and pick up a hobby (preferably a healthy one!).

Playing nice

Our mothers had plenty advice for us on dealing with friends, siblings and even strangers: “Treat others as you want to be treated.” That means be nice to that annoying customer service rep on the other end of the line. After all, “you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” So go ahead and “kill them with kindness.”

Saying no

“If your friends jumped off a bridge …” Mom’s advice to think for yourself has probably gotten you pretty far in life and kept you out of some jams.

Understanding value

With our overflowing landfills, this little piece of wisdom becomes more golden every day: “If you want nice things, keep what you already have nice.” Well said, moms!

Grooming for success

The mom favorite goes: “Even an old barn looks better with a fresh coat of paint.” That coat of paint might be something as simple as a clean shirt or some lipstick — something many Southern moms never leave home without. The bottom line is that taking a little pride in your appearance can do wonders for how you carry yourself and for how you feel, especially when you’re down.
