Add these travel kit items to your list to prevent and solve minor problems.

 

Travel is meant to be fun, but sometimes little things go wrong. If you don’t feel well or get a few scrapes or bug bites, having some basic travel kit items with you can make it easier to deal with these minor setbacks and get on with your adventure.

The following items are smart additions to your suitcase or backpack. Better yet, keep them stored together as a kit you can toss into your bag every time you travel. Here’s a travel kit checklist, from the Vanderbilt International Travel Clinic:

First aid supplies

  • Ace bandages
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Antihistamine for allergies
  • Anti-motion sickness bands and/or medication
  • Gauze and tape
  • Laxative
  • Moleskin for blisters
  • Neosporin or another antibacterial ointment
  • Pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • Stomach medicines
  • Prescription medications

Other essentials

  • Birth control/condoms
  • Dental supplies
  • Electrical plug adapter, if traveling to a foreign country
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Insect repellant with DEET
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Mosquito netting, if necessary for your destination
  • Safety pins
  • Sewing kit
  • Small packets of facial tissues
  • Spare glasses, contact lenses, cleaning/wetting solution
  • Sunscreen
  • Tampons/sanitary napkins
